Ok - here's the deal. Photographers want to be discreet. Up on the altar is not an option and we don't want to be so close to the front that we block the view for your guests... So this simple tip will help us better capture the ring exchange.
Traditionally, the bride and groom stand directly across from each other or towards the minister. However, with just a little prior planning and practice during the rehearsal, you can dramatically increase the opportunity for your guests to actually see and the photographer to capture the ring exchange.
First: Stand with your toes and chest pointing "slightly" towards your guests in a \ _ / formation (Your minister/clergy is the underscore!) By the way, this also helps your guests see your face, expression and the detail on the front of your beautiful dress.
Next: When placing the ring on the finger - use one hand to hold the other persons wrist from the underneath or palm side. Try to keep your thumb out of the way. Slide the ring on with the other hand - using only your thumb and index finger only. The bride receiving her ring is the hardest to see because her left hand is farthest from the camera. Getting your groom to remember this tip is really important. Another great option is simply sliding the ring on and not holding the hand. This works perfectly!
Here are some couple great examples:
Not holding the hand examples - This works pefectly!
Unfortunately we have hundreds of these examples.... One thing we can do is stage the ring exchange and that works but may not have the same emotional impact. Enjoy!!!
