Wedding Tip Series – Indoor or Outdoor Wedding?

The heat of the summer, rain in the Fall, the nip of spring air, the unexpected cold snap, the humidity unique to Texas…. One thing we know for sure, wait a minute and the weather is bound to change. Do you want an indoor wedding or an outside wedding? We meet with many couples that say they can’t stand the heat or they love the beauty of the outdoors. To help you decide, here are a few tips and things to consider along with a few words from a photographers perspective.

Indoor Weddings
Indoor weddings offer a controlled environment; you can’t control the weather, but you set the thermostat. Clean and even floors, no heals sinking in grass, no mud, no mosquito bites, no wind, no chance of rain, and most of all consistent lighting. All very good points, right?  Why wouldn’t everyone have an indoor wedding? Simply: The beauty of central Texas. From a photographer’s point of view, here are a few things to consider about indoor ceremonies: Some churches and venues can have very harsh light; they might not allow the use of a flash and limited access to the certain areas.  There can also be restrictions on space and décor. We have been to some weddings that have a plain black certain or bright white backdrop with no interest. We bring portable studio lights and use a meter to determine the optimum light level. We also use high quality lens on our cameras that work great with low light. When looking at inside space, remember to consider what we will capture behind you.

Outdoor Weddings
Outdoor weddings are ultra-popular. Thanks to the natural beauty of many venues with trees, grass, water, plants, fountains etc. in most cases minimal decorating is necessary and that saves you money!  Crying babies can be walked away without the opening and closing or doors. Outdoor weddings usually allow your photographer to move around more freely often resulting in breathtaking wedding photos thanks to amazing natural light. Plus, our sunsets can be amazing. More good points…So why doesn’t everyone have an outdoor wedding? Yep, Texas weather! Tips for outdoor weddings: Remember your guests! Start on time and don’t keep them waiting. Make your guests comfortable and offer cold water bottles. Don’t have them looking directly into the sun, scout the venue for shaded places to take formal family and group pictures, and most important – pick a venue with a great Plan B in case of bad weather.
