Where to display and cut your wedding cake

Mark and I have decided to start blogging about tips, based on our experience, which can help create opportunities for successful wedding photography. After all the effort that you put into choosing the perfect wedding cake and all the time and hard work that the cake designer puts into creating it – do your cake a favor and display in a place that will provide a backdrop for great photographs. You will always get great images from us but a little thought about placement of your cake can be the difference between a good photo and a great photo.

Ideas – Find a decorative wall or background to set up your cake table. Beware of signs and doors. Nothing is pretty about an exit or restroom sign. Looking into a kitchen or bathroom is not attractive. Placing your cake in front of a window or mirror can be pretty, but glass is not always clean and can reflect the light from the camera’s flash. If you have an interesting wall, pick the wall over a window. If your venue does not have a special alcove for your cake or decorative wall, consider moving the cake into the center of the reception. Using your decorated room as a backdrop is better than a plain white wall. Another idea is to place the cake table in an area where people can view it but if the background is not optimal have the cake moved to the middle of the dance floor for your ceremonial cake cutting and then moved back for serving. A room full of people watching is better than an unattractive wall or a window with too much light shining in.

You want memorable pictures of your cake and the cutting! Below are great examples of good cake placement and photographs of settings that could have been improved.

Our tip - Think about everything that is going to be in your photos, even the background and you will be much happier with the results.
